Beautiful Music

My wife and I first attended Showtune Showdown in the early 2000s.

Since then it's grown into Ottawa's largest musical trivia competition pitting local musical societies against each other in an American Idol like contest with celebrity judges scoring group songs and bonus points on offer for correctly guessing song trivia questions - and singing that tune!

We loved it and have attended many subsequent annual productions.

It was always a secret dream of mine to accompany a team and that opportunity came my way in 2021 when organizers produced an online virtual production.

That was great but it wasn't live in front of an audience.

That treat had to wait until 2024 when my chance came to play for team Orpheus a second time.

Musical Director and Accompanist
Mark your calendars – Saturday, April 27th. Ottawa’s musical theatre performance game show is back!Come join Broadway Nights, Suzart Productions and Orpheus Musical Theatre as they battle it out with guest judges CBC’s All in a Day host Alan Neal, councillor Jeff Lieper and singer songwriter Lynn Miles!
Our two song choices were One Fine Day from Beautiful, The Carole King Musical and More Life from Now Hear This.

We had the strongest choreography of any team but the judges weren't impressed scoring us third after round one and we weren't able to buzz in for the extra points in the trivia round to move up.

Bummer from a competitive perspective.

But a joy to perform nevertheless.

Also got a great laugh from having my name mangled three times by emcee Jesse Reynolds - before he was corrected by the audience. Glad to hear they know my name!

I remember being a bit peeved that Suzart hadn't reached out to ask me on their team as I had originally been slated to play for them back in 2020 when COVID shut theater down. It took me a good week to clue in they probably wanted me to concentrate on the Lightning Thief musical . . .
