Reaching Higher
Am I Good Enough?
When I reached out to ToTo Too Theatre expressing my interest in taking on the challenge of musically directing a bigger show with a professional orchestra - I undersold myself.
Me: "I'm not the greatest pianist around. In fact, I drop notes like crazy. I don't play what's written. I cheat. I improvise to make my fingers get around what they cannot do. But I'm good enough to do this" I stressed. "If I flub a note I'll keep going and I won't stop."
Them: "That's the sign of a professional Steve. Not an amateur . . ."
I got the gig. And those words have stuck with me ever since. I am good enough.

Set in a private Catholic high school, BARE is a story about Jason and Peter, two gay high school students. The musical mainly elaborates on their struggles and deals with issues such as coming out, college, pregnancy, drugs and basically anything a teen can go through. As they struggle to come to terms with who they are, and who the world thinks they should be, they seek answers from their Church, their friends, and ultimately, from within themselves. Its rich, vibrant score draws on many styles of contemporary music.
Its cult status is established. The beautiful musical, Bare: A Pop Opera, was first performed in 2000. And although it never premiered on Broadway, it’s been performed Off-Broadway in the US, UK and Canada. Twenty years later, the stunning show is enjoying a revival on stages around the world.
Never performed in Ottawa before now, Bare is a dark and edgy show for a young cast. It’s the kind of theatre companies would be scared to produce—but not TotoToo Theater, who have a reputation for staging both entertaining and challenging works.

Our show run ended on March 7th 2020. Less than one week later COVID burst on the scene as a serious health threat and shut down live entertainment performances for the foreseeable future.
